Traditional Foiling or (Highlights) vs. Modern Blonding Techniques

Back when I started doing hair in the 90s the hair color world had almost finished moving from the old hair lightening technique (“Frosting” or pulling hair through a plastic cap with a crochet hook and bleaching) to the much more flexible and predictable technique of “Foiling” or “weaving” or  “Highlighting” (using a special comb to weave out individual little strands or chunks of hair that are then separated out from the other hair by using foil and colorized or lightened) that most people are familiar with today.

Times Have Changed

Over the decades, what I now call “classic highlighting” has expanded into dozens of advanced methods that are much more difficult to define, implement correctly and price out. Here is a non exhaustive list that even with no additional detail might just make your head spin…

Add to this list social media, photoshop manipulations and filters and everyone’s ability to immediately pull up whatever celebrity stylists are up to and you can begin to understand how complicated the answer to “I just want some highlights, how much will it cost?” becomes.  What used to be a straightforward world where everyone was looking for the same basic thing with some slight variation has morphed into a magical, multi layered Unicorn world where many people are looking to do their own unique thing and then change that thing every appointment.

So We Need To Work Together

How do salon owners, stylists and customers navigate these treacherous shoals?  If a customer books a highlight (which stylists used to be able to easily double book every 45 minutes… basically allowing them to double their hourly income and keep costs down for guests) but really has a picture of Modern Blonding or Magical Unicorn Hair in their head you can see the problem.  The stylist may need to book 4 or 5 (or even 6 or 8)  hours straight to achieve the look the guest is after.  A good stylist is worth between $100-$150 an hour for advanced color.  This is how we get to color transformations that can cost between $500 and $1000 bucks (or more)! If there’s not clarity on all this before a service begins the negative results can be quite predictable.

If the stylist tries to fudge it and just do a slightly enhanced version of a traditional foil (which is all she has time for in the 2-3 hours booked for a highlight) the guest is likely to leave unhappy.
$2-300 bucks is a lot to spend to not get the result you want even if it’s the service you booked!  If on the other hand, the stylists explains “this is gonna cost a “little more” depending on how much time it takes”, clears her day and nails the color, the client may have a heart attack when they’re handed their bill at the end of a 6 or 7 hour service.  To prevent death, a stylist in this scenario will sometimes be forced (on the spot) to reduce the price for an outraged client or the salon owner just gives up their cut which ends up leaving everyone feeling taken advantage of and frustrated.   What to do?

Here's What We're Gonna Do!

Here at Hair by Joey we always strive to clear all this up on the front end so everyone is happy. Therefore, we suggest you follow the following protocol.

Watch The Video

Ms. Chen does the best breakdown of this situation we’ve ever seen.  Watch it and you’ll get it (and get some ideas on how to manage the cost if Modern Blonding is what you really need).

If you're over 40

particularly if you’ve been getting foils for a while chances are you’re thinking of traditional highlights.  It comes in two formats… full (foils dispersed through the whole head) and partial (foils at the temples and the whole crown with the bottom left out) These services can still cover multiple colors, grey blending and highlight/lowlight combinations. We can also colorize the hair in between the foils with this service (to cover grey for instance) though this adds a $25 upcharge.   If this is you, you can go ahead and book online here or give Joey a call or text at 928.396.1695 and ask to book either a full or partial highlight either with or without a haircut.  Easy peasy.*

*The only exceptions here in regards to timing and price are…

A. Amount of hair
B. Number of foils and
C. Amount of color difference between what you have and what you’re after.

If you have hair past the middle of your back or very thick hair or if you like to have a TON of foils (you know who you are) you need to put this up front when you book your appointment.  If you’re wanting to go from very dark (ESPECIALLY IF YOU’VE COLORED YOUR HAIR DARK) and you’re waiting to go into any shade of blond other than goldy orange you need to put this up front when you book your appointment. This way we can give you a price and give your stylist the time she’ll need to get it right.

If you're under 40

particularly if you’re in your teens or 20s and have been looking for “inspiration pics” online, chances are you’re looking for Modern Blonding (Or Modern Coloring).  If this is you, YOU MUST CLICK HERE TO BOOK A FREE CONSULTATION OR FACE A HIGH LIKELIHOOD OF A TRAINWRECK!  Don’t skip this step.  We know you’re excited.  We are too!  That’s why we have to get this right!

“Modern Blonding” includes everything that isn’t traditional foiling and books out at $100 an hour.  At your free consultation you’ll be given a solid ball park estimate and a $100 non refundable deposit will be taken to secure your spot with one of our specialists.  If you live hours out of town or are just super busy, SOME of our colorists are willing to block time based on a phone video consultation or even still picks so if this is you, reach out to me and we’ll see what can be done.

Don't Blow It Now!

Now after reading this, you may be thinking “I don’t wanna spend hundreds of dollars on my hair color and Salon ABC down the road quoted me $150 for a foil and a haircut!”.  A little advice here just… like I tell my kids.  It’s bullshit.  This is not how the world works. No colorist capable of getting that icy blond Balayage you’re after charges $150 for a cut and complex color.  I’m sorry if that’s what you were used to paying back in the day or if that’s all your parents can afford.  For $150 you’ll either get a quick classic foil and trim or you’ll get a rookie who says a lot of “yeah sure no problem, I can do that” and then crowns you with a fried out halo of yellow/orange tragedy.  How do I know?  Because we fix these disasters.  Every month.  They’re just as expensive to fix as they are to create so you might wanna keep that in mind if you’re tempted to lean cheap.

Hope this clears things up! If you have any suggestions or questions drop me an email at hairbyjoeyprescott@gmail.com
